Concerns about physician shortages have encouraged policy makers in the US to advocated for greater use of nurse practitioners (NPs). Between 2010 and 2017, the number of NPs in the US more than doubled from 91,000 to 190,000, largely concentrated in primary care. Much research has revealed the presence of many organizational (i.e., care environment with support and collegiality) and structural (e.g., disease registries and reminder systems) barriers within primary care practices employing NPs, which makes it challenging for NPs to provide high-quality continuous care to patients. Drs. Germack and Harrison will describe findings from a recent survey of NPs in six states with varied scope of practice regulations.
