SGIM 2019: Featured Photos

At this year's Society of General Internal Medicine Annual Meeting, many students, residents, and faculty members from the Division of General Internal Medicine and the Center for Research on Health Care traveled to Washington, DC from May 8th—11th to take part in SGIM 2019. To help commemorate the recognitions awarded and connections made during SGIM's week in Washington, we're sharing some of our favorite photos from the conference.

Congratulations to the two award winners representing the Division of General Internal Medicine and the CRHC: Dr. Eloho Ufomata, MD, MS, who was selected for a fellowship for the Unified Leadership Training for Diversity Program, and Dr. Sonya Borrero, MD, MS, Director of the Center for Women's Health Research and Innovation, who was honored with the 2019 Mid-Career Research Mentorship Award.

The Division of General Internal Medicine was represented by not one but two candidates for the Milton W. Hamolsky Jr. Faculty Scientific Presentation Award: Dr. Eliana Bonifacino, MD, and Dr. Natasha Parekh, MD, MS. Dr. Bonifacino presented her systematic review on mentorship of underrepresented physicians and trainees, and Dr. Parekh's presentation focused on the impact of Medicare Star Rating adherence measures on medication adherence.

Additionally, Dr. Jonathan Arnold, MD, MSE was a candidate for the Mack Lipkin Sr. Associate Member Scientific Presentation Award. His presentation was titled, "Association of State Laws Mandating Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Use by Prescribers on Discontinuation of Chronic Opioid Therapy in Veterans."

Our Division Chief, Dr. Jane Liebschutz, MD, MPH, FACP, led one of SGIM's innovative Poster Walk & Talks on the subject of "Innovations in Medical Education in Wellness." Throughout the week, many of the Division's medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty presented posters featuring new research relating to clinical care, education, and healthcare research.

Dr. Bruce Rollman, MD, MPH, Director of the Center for Behavioral Health and Smart Technology, presented a poster on the Hopeful Heart Trial, which "aims to examine if treating depression and heart failure together is more effective at improving health-related quality of life than treating heart failure alone."

Dr. Tom Radomski, MD, MS and Dr. Utibe Essien, MD, MPH, both core CRHC faculty members, each presented multiple posters at SGIM. Their presentations repeatedly drew big crowds and generated a lot of smiles! In addition, Dr. Essien was later honored as the Inaugural Distinguished Professor of Health Equity Poster Walk and Talk.

The Division of General Internal Medicine hosted its annual reception for SGIM attendees on May 9th, which gave DGIM- and CRHC-affiliated attendees the opportunity to network with other SGIM members from across the country and reconnect with former collaborators and coworkers. The reception featured an informal reunion of many current and former Academic Clinician-Educator Scholars (ACES) fellows.

Lastly, Dr. Liebschutz and CRHC Co-Director Dr. Walid Gellad, MD, MPH were on hand to welcome Dr. Jing Luo, our newest faculty member who will be joining the CRHC in the fall. In February, Dr. Luo was a featured speaker at the CRHC's Health Services Research Seminar Series, when he delivered a presentation on access to affordable insulin in the US. As is tradition, Dr. Luo was welcomed with a University of Pittsburgh hat and t-shirt!

We're proud to have had such great representation at SGIM 2019, and we're looking forward to even more new discoveries and collaborations at next year's conference in Birmingham, Alabama! To learn more about SGIM 2020, visit the Society of General Internal Medicine's "Future Events" webpage.
