Although evidence supports the superior effectiveness of NSAIDs and acetaminophen for dental pain, opioids are still prescribed by dentists. Little is known about the serious adverse outcomes of short acting opioids within the context of dental prescribing. This talk will examine serious opioid related adverse outcomes and persistent opioid use following an opioid prescribed by a dentist among commercially insured US adults. Differences in outcomes based on overprescribing and after publication of 2016 CDC guidelines are also discussed.
