Age is one of the most important risk factors for the development of breast cancer. Nearly a third of all breast cancer cases occur in older women (aged 70 years or older), with the vast majority of these tumors considered estrogen receptor positive (ER+). Such tumors are often indolent and unlikely to be the ultimate cause of death for older women, particularly when considering other competing ailments. This presentation will focus on de-implementation, or "right-sizing," efforts to reduce low-value surgical care - including both axillary surgery (sentinel lymph node biopsy; SLNB) and, in some cases, breast surgery altogether.
