The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that over 2 million Americans sustain a mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) annually; with the majority using the Emergency Department as their first line of care. Women make up over 40% of the injured, and compared to male cohorts, experience worse cognitive, somatic and psychological sequelae.
A woman’s gender role in society as a wife, mother or daughter could result in a much more differentiated constellation of family dynamics and expectations in the setting of mTBI. Understanding the sexual and reproductive ramifications of the head injury is a critical and necessary step to first acknowledging the bio-psycho-social nature of the head injury; and secondly to identifying subgroups of women with mTBI who can be targeted for future intervention.
