Elder abuse affects up to 1 in 10 older adults in the US every year and has devastating health consequences yet is rarely detected or routinely documented in healthcare settings, limiting opportunities for intervention and for research about this phenomenon. In this presentation, Dr. Makaroun will describe how her team used unique VA administrative data to study the largest cohort of older adults receiving healthcare-based services for elder abuse identified to date. She will present findings from a case-control study analyzing characteristics associated with receiving elder abuse services and outline directions for future research to enhance  detection and intervention for elder abuse in healthcare settings to improve safety, health, and quality of life for this high-risk population of older adults.
