In this presentation, Dr. Jonassaint will present data testing the construct validity of using animations and a paintable body image for assessing pain outcomes in sickle cell disease (SCD). This trial analyzed 359 adults with SCD who completed a battery of pain outcomes measures along with Painimation, an animation-based pain assessment tool. The “shooting” pain animation and greater body surface area affected by pain were associated with worse patient-reported pain and mental health measures. These data confirm prior findings showing that specific animations may point to more severe pain profiles in adults with SCD. Future research may find that using “painimations” is more effective for determining treatment needs and effectiveness than the traditional 0-10 scale. Dr. Jonassaint will discuss the significance of these trial findings in identifying improved methods for pain evaluation in SCD and other pain populations.
