Low-value care, defined as the use of a health service whose costs or harms exceeds its potential benefits, is common and results in harms to patients and significant costs to healthcare systems. In today’s presentation, Dr. Pickering will discuss her recent scholarly work, which involves using both qualitative and quantitative methods to better understand key stakeholder perspectives on and downstream consequences of low-value care. She will present key findings from qualitative analyses examining patients', caregivers', and clinicians’ views on low-value medication use and deprescribing. She will also discuss her recent work using VA administrative data to characterize low-value care cascades within the Veterans Health Administration. Lastly, she will discuss her proposed professional trajectory, highlighting future directions aimed at the de-implementation of low-value health services.
