Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity Statement

The CRHC aspires to carry out multidisciplinary research that advances anti-racist, inclusive, and equitable health for all communities. Knowing that improving health, healthcare quality, policy, and practice for everyone cannot be achieved without a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, the CRHC builds and nurtures diverse teams of faculty, staff, and learners to conduct research that elevates underrepresented and underserved communities and leads to inclusive excellence.

Diversity Supplements

WHY should I apply for a NIH Diversity Supplement?
  • Diversity Supplement funding is a way to improve diversity in the research workforce and mentoring initiatives at the DOM.
WHAT are NIH Diversity Supplements?
  • All NIH institutes offer diversity supplements to parent grants.
  • Funds are meant to recruit and support high school, undergraduate and graduate/clinical students, post-doctorates (including health professional), and eligible investigators.
  • Diversity supplements must support work within the scope of the original project.
  • Diversity supplements do not involve leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary study to a clinical trial.
  • Applicants to this FOA are permitted to propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor.
  • Diversity Supplement parent announcement
WHO do NIH Diversity Supplements support?
  • NIH encourages institutions to diversify their student, post-doctorate and faculty populations to enhance the participation of individuals from groups identified as underrepresented in the biomedical, clinical, behavioral and social sciences-for details, see Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity.
  • It should be noted that literature also shows that women from the above backgrounds face particular challenges at the graduate level and beyond in scientific fields.
HOW does budgeting for NIH Diversity Supplements work?
  • Application budgets are limited to no more than the amount of the current parent award, and must reflect the actual needs of the proposed project.
  • Direct costs for individual administrative supplements vary from less than $5,000 to more than $100,000 depending on the career level of the candidate.
  • Administrative supplements end with the currently funded competitive cycle of the parent grant. Budget requests may also be limited by the awarding institute.
WHEN should I apply for an NIH Diversity Supplement?
  • The project and budget periods must be within the currently approved project period for the existing parent award. In general, there should be at least two years remaining on the parent award funding period to receive a supplement, but check with your program officer for details about funding institution and mechanism rules.

HOW do I apply for an NIH Diversity Supplement?

  • Each institute is different and there are nuances –follow-up with your NIH program officer.
  • NIH also maintains a list of funding opportunities for candidates from underrepresented or disadvantaged groups.
