Leo H. Criep, MD Chair in Patient Experience

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking applications and nominations for the Leo H. Criep, M.D. Chair in Patient Experience in the Department of Medicine of the School of Medicine. This chair will serve as a national leader to further the University’s commitment to exceptional patient communication and outstanding care.

The Leo H. Criep, MD Chair in Patient Experience will foster a medical community focused on excellence in patient communication. This chair will have the opportunity to initiate a national dialogue on the importance of patient experience in all specialties. Therefore, understanding the link between patient communication and patient care with professionals in various fields of medicine is crucial. The chair will have the support of the university and health system to create and carry out an agenda that has, at its foundation, the education of medical students, physicians-in-training, and health care staff.  Additionally, this leader will promote interprofessional collaboration among students from all the health sciences schools. This will give the incumbent the opportunity to be innovative and farsighted in the planning and execution of this work.

The focus of the chair will be to promote the patient as a whole person, including mind, body, and spirit. The incumbent will be expected to implement this focus through activities related to research, teaching, writing, and direct patient care. They are encouraged to be creative and farsighted in their approach to this focus on humanism in medicine. The chair will promote a clinical and educational culture that incorporates this as standard practice. The candidate must be able to work cooperatively with a diverse group of professionals. 

The ideal candidate will be a physician or clinician with the ability to qualify for the rank of professor with tenure in the School of Medicine. Professor with tenure eligibility requirements include a track record of external funding and research expertise.  The position requires a candidate with demonstrable outcomes prioritizing the patient experience. The candidate will possess an understanding of the connection between patient communication, patient care, and outcomes. Educational experience with a commitment to training, mentoring, and advising others, including those in different fields of medicine, is essential. It is also crucial that the candidate possesses a genuine commitment to improving the overall experience for the patient, as well as their family. The ideal chair will help to build the national influence of the University in this discourse.
